It is nice to hear people talking about things getting back to normal – although the word normal is so charged these days. The pandemic certainly shined a spotlight on the inequities of what we once considered normal. That said, seeing restaurants full inside and out, feeling the frenetic energy of fans in the stands bringing excitement to the action on the field or the court, and once again pulling my passport from my drawer are all welcomed “normals”.
I suspect there will be a lot of living into joy as businesses and borders open, our loved ones are felt in our arms, and our ability to share our anxious days and concerning thoughts melt into smiles of reunion. Underneath this joy, we may find ourselves thinking of those who have yet to make the connection or those who will not, ever. So, as we start to ease ourselves out of the cocoon that has certainly included fear, sadness, and anxiety, there is that pause before fully embracing the feeling of being happy.
If there was ever a time for us to use the summer months to relax and recharge, it is now. I think of the positivity to be embraced as we dip our toes into some happiness and live into the special moments of reconnecting with family, friends, and what matters to us most.
We spoke a lot about GRACE during our REfresh sessions over this time. I do think that giving and getting grace is and should remain a central part of our ongoing normal. Take care of yourself and be grateful for what you can experience on the other side of this trying year, and for the first time in what may seem like forever, let yourself dream of all that is possible.
